Trouble-making Place-making: Dissident Bodies, Deviant Acts & the Queer Art of Undefining Urbanism

Abstract

Volant erràticament per Europa durant anys, aquesta tesi va començar intentant abordar la pregunta: "Què és l'urbanisme queer?". Armada amb el cànon de la teoria queer, l'intent de l'autor de crear un doctorat cohesionat i directe va quedar frustrat després que una sèrie d'errors i inadaptacions bloquegessin el camí. Amb una sinceritat sardònica esquitxada d'una mica d'ironia capritxosa, l'autor va utilitzar les seves accions provocadores per crear un portafoli de performance, poesia, dibuix i objectes que desafien les necessitats, els desitjos i els usos del seu entorn i usuaris. Intentant desesperadament crear una semblança d'equilibri en aquest món desequilibrat. Possiblement llegida com una versió completa de "Walking in the City" de Michel de Certeau, o una deriva traçada en anècdotes asinines, amb molles de pa xopes de llàgrimes obrint el camí, o la guia poc pràctica d'un ésser queer per a la vida quotidiana i la mort a la ciutat.

Flitting erratically across Europe for four years, this thesis started off trying to tackle the question, “What is Queer Urbanism?” When personal tragedy struck, the grief and ghosts were invited (unwillingly) along to join in on this fool’s crusade. Sardonic sincerity speckled with a smattering of whimsical irony, the author used their provocative and/or perversive actions to create a portfolio of performance, drawing, and objects which challenge the needs, wants, and uses of their environment and users. Desperately trying to fashion some semblance of balance in this lopsided world, poetry provided the warm embrace of dark magic which was badly needed. Possibly read as a fleshed-out version of Michel de Certeau’s ‘Walking in the City’, or a dérive mapped out in asinine anecdotes, with tear-soaked-breadcrumbs paving the way, or one queer being’s impractical guide to everyday life & death in the city.
