Abstract

La reina Victòria, de l’escriptor anglès Lytton Strachey, arribà a Catalunya el 1935, dos anys després de la mort de l’autor i catorze després que aparegués per primera vegada a Londres amb un excepcional acolliment. Publicada per l’editorial Atena i traduïda pel polític, pedagog i escriptor Pau Romeva, rebé tots els honors de la crítica, que l’erigiren com un dels models europeus del gènere biogràfic, molt en voga les primeres dècades del segle xx. Aquest article analitza la recepció catalana de la traducció de La reina Victòria, editada pocs mesos abans d’esclatar la guerra civil. Molts factors confluïren perquè fos una versió única, irrepetible.

Queen Victoria by English writer Lytton Strachey came out in Catalonia as La reina Victòria in 1935, two years after the author’s death and fourteen years after first appearing in London to exceptional critical acclaim. Published by Editorial Atena and translated by the statesman, pedagogue and writer Pau Romeva, the work was lauded by critics, who held it up as a model of European biography, very much the trend in the early decades of the twentieth century. This article analyzes the Catalan reception of the translation, La reina Victòria, published only months before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. A number of factors combined to make this translation one that is truly unique.
