El sector porcí a la comarca d’Osona: motor econòmic i repte ambiental

Abstract

L’agricultura i la ramaderia han tingut un paper clau en el desenvolupament d’Osona al llarg del temps. Tot i això, en les darreres dècades, el sector primari s’ha transformat, passant de petites explotacions amb diversificació de bestiar a grans granges especialitzades en l’engreix de porcs i orientades a un model de producció industrial. A partir d’aquí, els objectius d’aquest treball han estat caracteritzar el sector porcí a la comarca d’Osona i identificar-ne els impactes tant a nivell econòmic com ambiental. Per assolir aquests objectius, s’ha emprat una metodologia basada en l’anàlisi de dades i la consulta de fonts secundàries, combinada amb quatre entrevistes realitzades a experts del sector. Els resultats de la recerca conclouen que Osona és una comarca que té en el porc el seu principal motor econòmic. Paral·lelament a l’especialització en la ramaderia porcina, s’ha desenvolupat una potent cadena agroalimentària que, aprofitant els diferents recursos del territori, constitueix el primer sector econòmic a nivell comarcal, compta amb les empreses amb major facturació d’Osona i ocupa a una gran part de la població. Tanmateix, la sobre dimensió de la cabana porcina osonenca ha tingut impactes negatius sobre el medi ambient, com la contaminació dels aqüífers, la sobreexplotació dels recursos hídrics i la contribució a l’escalfament global. En definitiva, aquest treball no només permet entendre la importància i les conseqüències del sector porcí a Osona, sinó que també convida a reflexionar sobre el model de producció que volem com a societat.

Agriculture and livestock have played a key role in Osona’s development. However, in recent decades, the primary sector has changed, going from small farms with diverse livestock to large farms specialized in pig fattening and oriented towards an industrial production model. From here, the objectives of this project have been to describe the swine sector in the region of Osona and to identify its impacts both at the economic and environmental level. To reach these objectives, a method based on data analysis and the consultation of secondary sources has been used, combined with four interviews carried out with experts in the sector. The results of the research show that Osona is a region where pigs are the main economic engine. Along with the specialization in pig farming, a strong agri-food chain has developed, taking advantage of the different resources of the territory. It is the first economic sector in the region, has the companies with the highest income in Osona, and gives work to a large part of the population. However, the size of the pig population in Osona has had negative impacts on the environment, like the pollution of the aquifers in the region because of the livestock waste, the overuse of water resources, and the contribution to global warming. In conclusion, this work not only helps us to understand the importance and consequences of the swine sector in Osona but also invites us to think about the production model we want as a society.
