Beyond Boundaries: Translating Western Gender Discourses Transnationally: A Case Study of Feminist and Gender-friendly Children’s Literature in 21ˢᵗ Century Turkey (2005-2021)

Abstract

Esta tesis explora la traducción de literatura infantil feminista y con perspectiva de género, centrándose en obras que viajaron desde Occidente hacia Turquía en el siglo XXI. Destaca cómo la traducción actúa como herramienta performativa y didáctica, fomentando el diálogo entre feminismos y discursos de género occidentales y turcos. A través de una lente feminista transnacional, analiza cómo se traducen los libros, cómo editores y traductores importan conceptos de género al contexto turco, y cómo los niños reciben estos textos. El estudio muestra que, si bien los libros traducidos promueven perspectivas feministas y desafían normas de género, surgen tensiones cuando temas como sexualidad e identidades LGBTQ+ confrontan normas patriarcales. Los agentes editoriales aplican técnicas feministas para equilibrar intención ideológica y accesibilidad cultural. A pesar de limitaciones, los niños respondieron con curiosidad y apertura. La tesis subraya el potencial de la traducción para impulsar cambio social y diálogo feminista transnacional.

This thesis explores the translation of feminist and gender-friendly children’s literature, focusing on works travelled from West into Turkey in 21st Century. It highlights how translation serves as a performative and didactic tool, fostering dialogue between Western and Turkish feminisms and gender discourses. Using a transnational feminist lens, it investigates how books are translated, how editors and translators import gender concepts into Turkey, and how children receive these texts. The study reveals that while translated books promote feminist perspectives and challenge gender norms, tensions arise when themes like sexuality and LGBTQ+ identities confront local patriarchal norms. Editors and translators employ strategic feminist techniques to balance ideological intent with cultural accessibility. Despite limitations, children responded positively, showing curiosity and openness, though with some resistance to particular themes. The thesis underscores translation’s potential to instigate social change and cultivate transnational feminist dialogue through children’s literature in hybrid cultural settings like Turkey.
