The thesis investigates children’s participation in school by positioning their voices as essential sources for understanding educational institutions. Its main objective is to analyse how pupils completing primary education conceptualise and experience participation, and whether these experiences contribute to the development of democratic values within a rights based framework. The study employs a dual analytical instrument: a conceptual model grounded in the theoretical literature and an ad hoc model developed through a systematic reading of children’s biographical narratives. Schools are identified as key contexts where participatory practices reveal both their pedagogical potential and their constraints. The thesis contributes by reaffirming the need to incorporate children’s perspectives into research and educational decision making; by providing analytical tools that support rethinking citizenship education from a rights oriented standpoint; and by emphasising the relevance of initial and ongoing teacher education in strengthening educators’ capacity to accompany children’s social and civic development.
