Catalans a Amèrica. Felisa Costa i Just Pou: un matrimoni vigatà a Nova York (1828-1862)

Abstract

L’article estudia la vida de Felisa Costa Verge (1810-1867) i dels tres homes que van marcar la seva trajectòria vital: el pare, Josep Costa Galí (1777-1820), un destacat advocat liberal; el marit, Just Pou Fontanals (1800-1850), vigatà que, juntament amb el seu germà, Pau Pou, tenia un important magatzem de productes farmacèutics a Nova York i negocis a l’Havana i altres ciutats de l’illa de Cuba, i el fill, Pablo Pou Costa (1836-1862), que durant la Guerra de Secessió americana s’enrolà com a voluntari i morí en defensa de la Unió. Tots ells constitueixen un exemple dels catalans que van anar a Amèrica per raons personals, professionals o en cerca de fortuna.

The article studies the life of Felisa Costa Verge (1810-1867) and the three men who made a mark on her life: her father, Josep Costa Galí (1777-1820), a leading liberal lawyer; her husband, Just Pou Fontanals (1800-1850), from Vic, who together with his brother, Pau Pou, had an large store of pharmaceutical products in New York and business in Havana and other Cuban cities, and her son, Pablo Pou Costa (1836-1862), who during the American Civil War enlisted as a volunteer and died in defence of the Union. All of them form an example of the Catalans who went to America for personal or professional reasons or in search of a fortune.
