The power of multisensory storytelling to learn english vocabulary in early childhood

Abstract

This project consists of designing a multisensory learning proposal based on an adapted version of the traditional Catalan tale En Patufet, with the objective of teaching English vocabulary to young children in early childhood education, specifically for I5 learners (5-year-olds). The proposal includes four sensory spaces, each representing a key scene from the story, where, through sensory exploration (touch, taste, sight, hearing, and smell), children can learn English in a meaningful way. The design of these spaces is supported by different theoretical references. Moreover, to validate the proposal design, a questionnaire is shared with professionals specializing in early childhood education and English as a foreign language.

Aquest treball consisteix en el disseny d’una proposta d’aprenentatge multisensorial basada en l’adaptació del conte tradicional català En Patufet, amb l’objectiu d’ensenyar vocabulari en anglès a infants d’educació infantil, concretament del nivell I5. La proposta inclou quatre espais sensorials que representen escenes importants del conte, on través de l’experimentació amb els cinc sentits (el tacte, el gust, la vista, l’oïda i l’olfacte), els infants puguin aprendre l’anglès de manera significativa. El disseny d’aquests espais s’ha fonamentat en diversos referents teòrics. A més, per tal de validar la proposta, s’ha elaborat un qüestionari que s’ha fet arribar a diversos especialistes en educació Infantil i en l’ensenyament de l’anglès com a llengua estrangera.
