Photography as a tool to foster the teaching-learning process of English as a second language: a didactic proposal

Abstract

This study intends to discuss how English as a foreign language (EFL) can be taught in primary education through photography. The study takes a look into the importance of arts and the benefits that photography can offer in the teaching-learning process, analysing what different experts on the art field and language teaching field suggest. The study consists of two parts: the first part offers a didactic proposal for children of 6th grade that focuses on English teaching through photography based on the ideas of different experts; in the second part, through a qualitative approach in which three primary English teachers are interviewed, it is discussed how photography contributes to language learning and to what extent the activities in the didactic proposal would work in a classroom context.

Aquest estudi pretén analitzar com es pot ensenyar l’anglès com a llengua estrangera (EFL) a l’educació primària a través de la fotografia. L’estudi analitza la importància de les arts i els avantatges que ofereix la fotografia en el procés d’ensenyament-aprenentatge, analitzant el que suggereixen diferents experts en el camp de l’art i l’ensenyament de la llengua. L’estudi consta de dues parts: la primera part ofereix una proposta didàctica per a infants de 6è de primària que se centra en l’ensenyament de l’anglès a través de la fotografia a partir de les idees de diferents experts; a la segona part, mitjançant un enfocament qualitatiu en què s’entrevisten tres mestres d’anglès a educació primària, s’analitza com la fotografia contribueix a l’aprenentatge d’idiomes i fins a quin punt funcionaria la proposta d’activitats en un context d’aula.
