Abstract
The Buenos Aires derby between Boca Juniors and River Plate represents one of the key rivalries in global football, with a history dating back more than a hundred years. The rivalry reveals much about the history, politics and identity of the Argentinian game, shedding light on wider themes within Argentinian society and political culture. Our chapter explores these issues through the filter of the Boca – River axis, providing insights into fandom, players, teams and coaches.
