Teachers' and children's perceptions and beliefs in doing escape rooms as a motivating reading activity

Abstract

In the last years, the concept of gamification has been spread to schools as a good motivating resource. Moreover, an innovative type of gamification has emerged in the society which has begun to be also introduced in education; this new tool is the escape room. On the other hand, one of the learning English skills where students seem to show less enthusiasm is reading. For this reason, this final dissertation has been focused on reading comprehension through gamification, specifically escape rooms, as a motivating activity. Thus, this article collects the perceptions and beliefs of students and teachers regarding these concepts and their relationship. The results show that reading can be incorporated as the main goal in motivating proposals such as escape rooms.

Des de fa uns quants anys, s’ha estès el concepte de gamificació a les escoles com a un bon recurs motivador. A més a més, ha aparegut un tipus de gamificació innovador a la societat el qual s’ha començat a introduir també a l’educació; aquesta nova eina és l’escape room. Per altra banda, una de les habilitats en l’aprenentatge de la llengua anglesa on els alumnes semblen mostrar menys entusiasme és la lectura amb la seva comprensió. Per aquest motiu, aquest treball final de grau ha volgut enfocar el treball de comprensió lectora en la utilització de gamificació, específicament escape rooms, com una activitat motivadora. Així doncs, aquest article recull les percepcions i creences d’estudiants i mestres respecte aquests conceptes i la seva relació. Els resultats mostren que es pot incorporar la lectura com a objectiu principal a propostes motivadores com són els escape rooms.
